While serving in the United States Navy, including time as a Combat Air Controller during the Gulf War, Rich earned his degree in Business Administration from Central Texas College and upon exiting his military service spent some time in real estate and finance before joining Jani‑King. Rich has been with Jani‑King for over twenty years beginning his career as an Account Executive for Jani‑King of Baton Rouge, LA. He went on to serve as Regional Director of Jani‑King of Mobile, AL from 1997 – 2004. He advanced further with the company in 2004 with the promotion to Regional Vice President and managed offices for Jani‑King Mobile and Montgomery, AL, and Pensacola, FL.
